Women of My Life Block Project

As we journey through life, there are many people who touch our hearts in dear and special ways. They give us a little part of themselves to carry with us. This quilting project is created to memorialize these people, remembering the love and strength they give us each and every day.

This month is National Women’s History month, and as I think back on the women throughout history that have influenced my world, I’m reminiscent of those that are not so famous, but have impacted me and changed my life. As my mind thought on these things, the desire to wrap myself in their love and support manifested itself in the idea of this quilt.

Please be encouraged to make this project into whatever you want it to be. Whether it is special women in your life, family, or everyone special to you old and young, men and women, take this idea and make it your own. – Betsey

Signature Block

4″ x 4″ finished

Using the cream 1¾” x 4½” rectangles, write a name on each rectangle. If you do not have all 161 names to begin with, use the blank cream rectangles and add the names later.

  1. Lay a 1¾” x 1¾” teal square on each end of the cream signature rectangle, right sides together.
  2. Sew from diagonally across each square to create the unit below.

  1. Trim the corners of the rectangle and square leaving a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seams toward the signature block. Make 161.
  2. Repeat this process with a 1 7/8″ x 1 7/8″ teal square and a 1 7/8″ x 4½” teal rectangle to create the unit below, making sure to match the direction of the angle. Make 322.

Block Assembly:

Using the diagram below. Piece the block together in rows. Press the seams toward the teal.

 Quilt Assembly:

Piece the quilt center in rows, then add each border, sides first.

Quilt as desired and bind.

Thank you AQS and Betsey Langford! You inspired me last year by this post. I went right to work making my own Women of my Life quilt. I’ve just finished my quilt and have posted “its story” on my website. You’ll find both the story and picture of my quilt on my website: http://studio2724.com/2018-2/ . I thought you might like to see what you inspired.

Yeah!!! I’m so glad! Reconnecting with friends to gather these signatures, transferring them to fabric, and even quilting around each one was a huge blessing to me this past year. Thank YOU!

Excited to share that my Women of my Life quilt earned a blue ribbon at the 2018 Virginia Quilt Show at the State Fair in the Special Occasion category. 🙂
