This time, our timing couldn’t have been better. In the April issue of TQL, we’ve featured a technique from Janet Stone called Fabulous Faux Flange. It’s a binding method with a cool twist, done entirely by machine. It’s way easier than it looks! I know—that’s how I finished the little strata quilt I made last fall (see my blog post from October 11, 2013).

Now, if Janet’s name sounds familiar, it should! Earlier this month, Janet walked away with two big prizes at AQS QuiltWeek® – Lancaster, Pennsylvania 2014. She won the Best Machine Workmanship Award for a Letter Bit of Baaltimore, and first prize in the Bed Quilts—Machine Quilted category for the spectacular A to Z for Ewe and Me (which, incidentally, is the 2014 BOM for And guess what? A to Z is finished with a beautiful teal and lime faux flange.

When she found out I was planning to make my own faux flange finish, Janet offered me a tip. When you are making a straight-grain binding, first tear lengthwise strips from your fabric. Then you’ll have a true straight edge from which to cut your binding strips.

Also, Janet‘s pressing surface is covered with plaid upholstery fabric! She uses the lines as a guide for pressing her binding strips nice and straight. If you have a solid color pressing surface, Janet suggests you consider drawing a straight line on it with a waterproof marker to use as a guide.

I admit to having been surprised by both of those tips, but I am definitely going to remember them when I bind my next quilt. I don’t argue with a winner…Jan Magee, The Quilt Life

I use a stripped ironingboard cover, for exactly that reason. Love Janet’s patterns.
