AQS was honored to participate in the Quilt Sew-In sponsored by the Des Moines Area Quilter’s Guild during the 2015 Iowa State Fair, August 13-23. Over the eleven days of the fair, 437 quilts were made for statewide children’s charities. Lots of daily prizes were given out to quilters and The Fabric Center of Morris, Illinois, provided a Janome 3160 sewing machine to giveaway. The lucky Janome winner was Julie Carstens of Bondurant, IA.
Mary Shotwell, AQS Liaison with the DMAQG, reports that quilts are already being delivered to Childserve located in Johnston, IA, a program that provides residential and day treatment for severely ill or disabled children. Other quilts are being distributed to children who have parents serving overseas.
Mary also had the pleasure of delivering the Janome sewing machine to Julie Carstens. Mary said Julie was one happy lady! Julie has been sewing since high school using a 20+-year-old Kenmore sewing machine. Julie has been teaching her granddaughter to sew on that same Kenmore and made the promise to give her the machine when Julie got a new one. Now that can happen! Julie hopes to attend AQS QuiltWeek® in Des Moines at the end of September and is eager to talk with The Fabric Center folks and AQS staff about winning the machine.
