Click here for the Foundation Paper Piecing patterns for the center of this block. When printing, the center square pattern measures 4 1/2″ square with seam allowances.
***Patches marked with an asterisk are paper piecing measurements – cut larger depending on your paper piecing preferences. If you don’t wish to paper piece, use the patterns as templates for cutting.
From the dark purple, cut:
*(5) 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares*
From the purple fabric, cut:
(8) 2” x 2” squares
From the yellow fabric, cut:
*(2) 4” x 4” squares, cut in half diagonally once*
From the light yellow fabric, cut:
*(4) 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares*
From the background fabric, cut:
(4) 2” x 2” squares
(1) 3 ½” x 3 ½” square
(4) 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares
Half Square Triangles
Mark the wrong side of the background 2” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked background square over a purple 2” square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.
Trim unit to 1 1/2” square. Make 4.

Mark four purple 2″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay two purple marked squares over a background 3 1/2″ square in diagonally opposite corners. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press.
Lay a purple square over the corner of the background triangle. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press. Repeat with the other background triangle.
Trim Flying Geese to 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 4.

Center Nine Patch
Click here to download the Foundation Paper Piecing Patterns for block five.
(If you prefer not to paper piece, use the patterns for templates instead. Cut the shapes apart, then use a ruler to add 1/4″ seam allowances when rotary cutting the pieces.)
Piece section A, B & C. Remove paper and sew the sections together using the final square pattern to build the center Nine Patch. Add the remaining corners. Remove the paper and continue block assembly.
Use the block diagram above to layout the block into three rows. Sew the units into rows.
Sew the rows together to complete the block.
Block measures 6 ½” x 6 ½” unfinished.
