Cutting Instructions

From the dark purple, cut:
(6) 2” x 2” squares
(1) 3 ½” x 3 ½” square

From the purple fabric, cut:
(4) 2” x 2” squares, cut in half diagonally once

From the light purple fabric, cut:
(4) 2” x 2” squares

From the dark yellow fabric, cut:
(4) 2” x 2” squares

From the yellow fabric, cut:
(1) 3 ½” x 3 ½” square

From the light yellow fabric, cut:
(1) 3 ½” x 3 ½” square

From the background fabric, cut:
(4) 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles
(6) 2” x 2” squares

Assembly

Half Square Triangle

Mark the wrong side of the background 2” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked background square over a dark purple 2” square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.

Trim unit to 1 1/2” square. Make 4.

Repeat with the light purple and background 2″ squares. Trim unit to 1 1/2” square. Make 8.

Quarter Square Triangle

Mark the back of a yellow 3 1/2″ squares in half diagonally once. Layer with a light yellow 3 1/2″ square, right sides together. Sew a 1/4″ on both sides of the marked line.  Cut apart on the marked line to make two Half Square Triangles.

Mark the back of one of the Half Square Triangle from corner to corner crossing the seam. Layer a marked Half Square Triangle with another Half Square Triangle right sides together with yellow triangles opposite each other. Sew a 1/4″ on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. 

Trim to 2 1/2″ square. 

Flying Geese

Mark four dark yellow 2″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay two dark yellow marked squares over a dark purple 3 1/2″ square in diagonally opposite corners. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press.

Lay a dark yellow square over the corner of the dark purple triangle. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press. Repeat with the other dark purple triangle.

Trim Flying Geese to 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 4.

Kite Unit

Click here to download the foundation paper piecing pattern for the Kite Unit.

If you do not wish to foundation paper piece, cut up the pattern and use as templates.

Lay a dark purple 2″ square on the paper pattern. Piece the purple 2″ square to each side of the dark purple kite shape. Make 4.

Trim to seam allowance and remove the paper.

Block Assembly

Use the block diagram above to layout the block into three rows. Sew the units into rows.
Sew the rows together to complete the block.

Block measures 6 ½” x 6 ½” unfinished.
