Cutting Instructions

From the dark purple, cut:
(4) 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares

From the purple fabric, cut:
(4) 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares

From the light purple fabric, cut:
(1) 3 ½” x 3 ½” square
(4) 2” x 2” squares

From the dark yellow fabric, cut:
(4) 1 ½” x 2 ½” rectangles

From the light yellow fabric, cut:
(4) 2” x 2” squares, cut in half diagonally once

From the background fabric, cut:
(8) 1 ½” x 1 ½” squares
(4) 2” x 2” squares

Assembly

Four Patch Units

Sew a dark purple 1 ½” square to a white 1 ½” square. Press seams toward the dark purple.
Sew a purple 1 ½” square to a white 1 ½” square. Press seams toward the purple.
Sew the two units together with colors alternating to make the Four Patch unit.


Unit measures 2 ½” x 2 ½”. Make 4.

Flying Geese

Mark four background 2″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay two background marked squares over a light purple 3 1/2″ square in diagonally opposite corners. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press.

Lay a background square over the corner of the light purple triangle. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press. Repeat with the other light purple triangle.

Trim Flying Geese to 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 4.

Sew a dark yellow 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle to the bottom of each Flying Geese. Make 4.

Kite Units

Click here to download the foundation paper piecing pattern for the Kite Unit.

If you do not wish to foundation paper piece, cut up the pattern and use as templates.

Lay a light purple 2″ square on the paper pattern. Piece the light yellow 2″ square to each side of the light purple kite shape. Make 4.

Trim to seam allowance and remove the paper.

Sew the four Kite units together as shown above to make the block center.

Block Assembly

Use the block diagram above to layout the block into three rows. Sew the units into rows.

Sew the rows together to complete the block.

Block measures 6 ½” x 6 ½” unfinished.
