Cutting Instructions
Only cut the pieces with the * if you are NOT using the foundation paper piecing patterns.
From the teal fabric, cut:
(4) 1½” x 1½” squares
(12) 2″ x 2″ squares
(12) 1″ x 1″ squares
(4) 1½” x 2″ rectangles
*(4) 1″ x 1½” rectangles
*(16) 1″ x 1″ squares
From the dark sky fabric, cut:
(4) 1¼” x 1¼” squares
(8) 1″ x 1″ squares
(1) 1½” x 1½” square
*(4) 1½” x 1½” squares
From the white fabric, cut:
(4) 1½” x 1½” squares
(4) 1¼” x 1¼” squares
(8) 1″ x 1″ squares
*(8) 1″ x 1″ squares
Assembly
Half Square Triangles
Mark the wrong side of the white 1½” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked white square over a teal 1½” square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.
Trim unit to 1″ square. Make 8.
Corner Flip Units
Mark the wrong side of a white 1¼” square diagonally once. Lay a marked square on the corner of a teal 2” square right sides together and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press.
Using the image above as a guide for orientation, repeat with a dark sky 1¼” square.
Unit measures 2″ square. Make 4.
Foundation Paper Piecing Units
If you don’t wish to foundation paper piece, skip this step and do the Flying Geese and Square in a Square assemblies below instead.
Download the foundation paper piecing patterns here.
Follow the numbered sequence to complete each unit using scraps of the teal, dark sky, and white fabrics.
Unit measures 1½” x 2″ unfinished. Make 4.
Flying Geese (Only do this step if you are NOT doing the Foundation Paper Piecing Unit)
Mark the wrong side of a white 1″ square diagonally once. Lay the marked white square on the corner of a teal 1″ x 1½” rectangle right sides together and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press. Repeat the process with a white 1″ square on the other end of the triangle.
Unit measures 1″ x 1½” rectangle. Make 4.
Square in a Square (Only do this step if you are NOT doing the Foundation Paper Piecing Unit)
Mark the wrong side of a teal 1” square diagonally once. Lay the marked teal square on the corner of a dark sky 1½” square right sides together and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press. Repeat on all four corners.
Unit measures 1½” square. Make 4.
Sew a Flying Geese unit to the bottom of the Square in a Square unit as shown above. Make 4.
Assembling the Block
Center Corners
Using the above image as a guide, layout the white/teal HSTs, along with the dark sky, white, and teal 1″ squares into rows.
Sew the pieces together to make the rows, then sew the rows together to complete the Center Corner unit.
Unit measures 2″ square. Make 4.
Block Center
Using the above image as a guide, sew a Center Corner unit to each side of a teal 1½” x 2″ rectangle. Make 2.
Sew a teal 1½” x 2″ rectangle to each side of a dark sky 1½” square.
Sew the rows together to complete the block center.
Block center measures 4½” square.
Putting it all Together
Sew a teal 2″ square to each side of a Square in a Square/Flying Geese unit. Make 4.
Sew one of these unit to each side of the block center.
Block center now measures 7½” x 4½” rectangle.
Sew the Corner Flip units to the ends of the two remaining units and sew to the top and bottom of the block center to complete the block.
Block measures 7½” x 7½” unfinished.
