Cutting Instructions
From the teal fabric, cut:
(6) 2″ x 2″ squares
(24) 1″ x 1″ squares
(1) 2½” x 2½” square
(2) 2⅛” x 2⅛” squares
(4) 1″ x 1½” rectangles
(9) 1½” x 1½” square
From the dark sky fabric, cut:
(4) 2″ x 2″ squares
(4) 1½” x 1½” squares
From the white fabric, cut:
(2) 2″ x 2″ squares
(4) 1″ x 1½” rectangles
(1) 2½” x 2½” square
Unit Assembly
Half Square Triangles (HST)
Mark the wrong side of the white 2″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a teal 2″ square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.
Unit measures 1½” square. Make 4.
Mark the wrong side of the teal 2″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a dark sky 2″ square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line.
Unit measures 1½” square. Make 8.
Flying Geese
Mark the wrong side of a teal 1″ square diagonally once. Lay the marked square on the corner of a white 1″ x 1½” rectangle and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press. Repeat the process with a teal 1″ square on the other end of the triangle.
Unit measures 1″ x 1½” rectangle. Make 4.
Square in a Square
Mark the wrong side of a teal 1” square diagonally once. Lay the marked square on the corner of a dark sky 1½” square and sew on the marked line. Trim a quarter inch from the marked line and press. Repeat on all four corners.
Unit measures 1½” square. Make 4.
Split Quarter Square Triangle
Mark the backs of the white 2½” squares in half diagonally once. Layer with a teal 2½” square, right sides together. Sew a ¼″ on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line to make two Half Square Triangles.
Mark the backs of the teal 2⅛” squares from corner to corner. Layer a marked square with a white/teal Half Square Triangle. Sew a ¼″ on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Repeat with the remaining Half Square Triangles.
Unit measures 1½” square. Make 4.
Kite Units
Download the foundation paper piecing patterns here.
Follow the numbered sequence to complete each unit using scraps of the teal and white fabrics.
Unit measures 2½” square. Make 4.
Block Assembly
Middle Section
Sew a white/teal Flying Geese unit to a dark sky/teal Square in a Square as shown below. Sew a teal 1″ x 1½” rectangle to the end of the unit as shown below.
Unit measures 1½” x 2½” rectangle. make 4.
Block Center
Layout the Kite units with the Middle Sections and the teal 1½” square as shown below. Sew into rows. Sew the rows together to complete the block center.
Unit measures 5½” square. Make 1.
Sides
Sew a dark sky/teal HST to each side of a white/teal Square in a Square as shown below. Sew a teal 1½” square to each end.
Unit measures 1½” x 5½” rectangle. Make 4.
Putting it all Together
Sew a Side unit to each side of the block center.
Sew a white/teal HST to each end of the two remaining side units. Sew them to the top and bottom to complete the block.
Block measures 7½” square.

Worked on this one today and found some changes: You actually need to make (8) dark/teal 1-1/2″ HSTs for the outer border so you need to cut (4) dark teal 2 inch squares. That means you also need to cut (6) teal 2 inch squares: four for those outer border dark/teal HSTs and two for the (4) outer corner white/teal 1-1/2″ HSTs.
