Paducah In Bloom: Setting Blocks

We are counting down the days to the AQS QuiltWeek Show in Paducah, Kentucky. Mark the occasion by making the Paducah In Bloom quilt! It’s an 80″ x 80″ sampler with 36 unique blocks. A block pattern will be released every day from March 18th, 2020 to April 22nd, 2020.

Large Bloom Setting Blocks (60 Total)

Cutting Instructions

From the white fabric, cut:
(60) 3⅜” x 3⅜”
(120) 3” x 3”
(60) 2½” x 6½”
(240) 1½” x 1½”

From the coral fabric, cut:
(60) 3⅜” x 3⅜”

From the yellow fabric, cut:
(120) 2½” x 2½”

Yellow Petal Units

Mark the wrong side of a white 1½” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a yellow 2½” square, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼” seam and press. Repeat on the other side with another marked white 1½” square.

Make 120 Yellow Petal units.

Split Quarter Square Triangle (Split QST) Units

Mark the wrong side of the white 3⅜” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a coral 3⅜” square, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Make 120 white/coral HST.

Mark the wrong side of the white 3” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a white/coral HST from the previous step, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Trim unit to 2½” square.

Make 240 white/coral Split QST. Note that half will appear with the coral on top and half with the coral on bottom.

Block Assembly

Use the block diagram above to lay the block out. Sew the units into rows.


Sew the rows together to complete the block.
Block measures 6½” x 6½” unfinished. Make 60.

Large Bloom Border Blocks (24 Total)

Cutting Instructions

From the white fabric, cut:
(12) 3⅜” x 3⅜”
(24) 3” x 3”
(48) 1½” x 1½”

From the coral fabric, cut:
(12) 3⅜” x 3⅜”

From the yellow fabric, cut:
(24) 2½” x 2½”

Yellow Petal Units

Mark the wrong side of a white 1½” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a yellow 2½” square, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼” seam and press. Repeat on the other side with another marked white 1½” square.

Make 24 Yellow Petal units.

Split Quarter Square Triangle (Split QST) Units

Mark the wrong side of the white 3⅜” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a coral 3⅜” square, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Make 24 white/coral HST.

Mark the wrong side of the white 3” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a white/coral HST from the previous step, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Trim unit to 2 ½” square.

Make 48 white/coral Split QST. Note that half will appear with the coral on top and half with the coral on bottom.

Block Assembly

Use the block diagram above to lay the block out. Sew the units into rows.

Sew the rows together to complete the block.
Block measures 2½” x 6½” unfinished. Make 24.

 

Small Bloom Setting Blocks (25 Total)

Cutting Instructions

From the white fabric, cut:
(50) 2” x 2”
(400) 1½” x 1½”

From the coral fabric, cut:
(100) 2½” x 2½”
(100) 1½” x 1½”

From the yellow fabric, cut:
(25) 2½” x 2½”

From the green fabric, cut:
(50) 2” x 2”
(100) 1½” x 2½”

Half Square Triangle (HST) Units

Mark the wrong side of the white 2” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a green 2” square, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Trim unit to 1½” square.

Make 100 white/green HST.

Corner Flip Units

Mark the wrong side of a white 1½” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a green 1½” x 2½” rectangle on the left end, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼ seam and press.

Make 100 green/white Corner Flip units.

Leaf Units

Arrange a white/green HST, a white 1 ½” square, and a green/white Corner Flip unit as shown below. Sew the HST and square together and press. Then sew the Corner Flip unit to the pair.

Corner unit measures 2½” x 2½” unfinished. Make 100.

Coral Petal Units

Mark the wrong side of a white 1½” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a coral 2½” square, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼” seam and press. Repeat on the other side with another marked white 1½” square.

Make 100 Coral Petal units.

Square In A Square (SIAS) Units

Mark the wrong side of 4 coral 1½” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over the corner of a yellow 2½” square, right sides together. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼” seam and press. Repeat on the remaining corners with the marked squares to make an SIAS unit.

Make 25.

Block Assembly

Use the block diagram above to lay the block out. Sew the units into rows.

Sew the rows together to complete the block.
Block measures 6½” x 6½” unfinished. Make 25.

 

Leaf Border Blocks (20 Total)

Cutting Instructions

From the white fabric, cut:
(20) 2½” x 2½”
(20) 2” x 2”
(80) 1½” x 1½”

From the green fabric, cut:
(20) 2” x 2”
(40) 1½” x 2½”

Half Square Triangle (HST) Units

Mark the wrong side of the white 2” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a green 2” square, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Trim unit to 1½” square.

Make 40 white/green HST.

Corner Flip Units

Mark the wrong side of a white 1½” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a green 1½” x 2½” rectangle on the left end, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼ seam and press.

Make 40 green/white Corner Flip units.

Leaf Units

Arrange a white/green HST, a white 1 ½” square, and a green/white Corner Flip unit as shown below. Sew the HST and square together and press. Then sew the Corner Flip unit to the pair.

Leaf unit measures 2½” x 2½” unfinished. Make 40.

Cutting Instructions

From the white fabric, cut:
(2) 2” x 2”
(8) 1½” x 1½”

From the green fabric, cut:
(2) 2” x 2”
(4) 1½” x 2½”

Half Square Triangle (HST) Units

Mark the wrong side of the white 2” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked square over a green 2” square, right sides together. Sew a ¼” from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line. Trim unit to 1½” square.

Make 4 white/green HST.

Corner Flip Units

Mark the wrong side of a white 1½” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked square right sides together with a green 1½” x 2½” rectangle on the left end, oriented as shown below. Sew on the marked line. Trim a ¼ seam and press.

I don’t see page 2 of the leaf border block of paducah in bloom. Is there a page 2?
