In this video, Elaine Brelsford interviews Gail Stepanek who, along with Jan Hutchison, won first place in the Traditional Bed Quilts category at AQS QuiltWeek – Phoenix, Arizona 2014.
Gail said the inspiration for this quilt began with an antique Mariner’s Compass quilt. When she asked a friend to draft a pattern for the quilt, her friend noticed that the compass blocks had 21 points. Not a very good compass design! Each point had a twin within the block except for the 21st. After some historical research, she found that back in the days when the original quilt was designed, those types of blocks probably fell into the Mariner’s Compass category. It would now be categorized as more of a Sunburst or Sunflower pattern. Thus the name of this quilt became MISTAKEN IDENTITY.
There’s another intriguing twist to this quilt’s story: Gail and Jan, who machine quilted the intricate design, have not met.
