My Quilt Story: Janet Atkins

KAATERSKILL by Janet Atkins

Kaaterskill took me four years to make. It won 3rd place in the Handmade Quilt category at the 2010 IQA show in Houston, among other honors. Quilter’s Newsletter magazine asked me to send it to them for photography, and they selected it as the cover of the June/July 2011 issue. It’s also featured as the August quilt in the 2012 IQA Calendar. This would be very exciting except…

Kaaterskill disappeared. The quilt was return shipped to me via UPS Next Day air on February 16, 2011. The UPS driver did not scan the package at pickup, so it’s next to impossible to trace. Thanks to an article in my local paper, the Times Union, UPS did an intensive search and found no trace of the package.

The Times Union article and subsequent articles in the Denver Post, the Grand Junction Sentinel, plus web postings on, (, and have generated kind words, encouragement and support, but no clues. The website ( has taken up the cause, and they are currently offering a $5,000 reward for the return of the quilt.

While UPS did pay the insurance claim, the money received doesn’t even come close to replacing the quilt. I was really looking forward to having it hang in Paducah, as it had been accepted at the 2011 AQS Paducah show. Your staff was very kind and allowed me extra time to get it to you, but unfortunately I had to withdraw. The quilt was made from fabric given to me by my online friends, and it’s entirely hand pieced and quilted. It’s like losing a part of me.

The address for reward information is; my email is

This design is wicked! You obviously know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool
