Dr. Peggy G. Rhodes and Julia C. Wood are the authors of the new AQS book Quick & Easy Hexie Quilts. This dynamic design duo brings new life to the hot trend of quilting with hexagons—they make hand piecing these little gems fast and fun.
Dr. Peggy G. Rhodes retired as Associate Dean from the University of Alabama’s Continuing Education Program in 1993 and at the top of her “To Do” list was a return to quilting. Peggy sampled quilting for the first time as a child when she and her grandmother made a Bow Tie quilt totally by hand. Peggy still has the quilt, though it is literally falling apart. Peggy’s love of learning new skills led to a return to teaching as she shared her techniques with frinds, quilt shops, and quilt guilds in Northwest Florida and Alabama. Her desire to learn more about quilting led her to the Birmingham Quilters Guild where she was able to expand her knowledge and explore new techniques through the national teacher’s program.
Peggy lives with her husband, Ronald, in Warrior, Alabama, and in their spare time, they both enjoy fishing, cooking, and “front porch” style bluegrass music. In addition, Peggy has been planning and conducting workshops, seminars, conferences, and retreats for the past 30+ years in areas such as strategic planning, team building, self-assessment, communication, individual and group goal-setting, and quilting (eg., Wearables, Watercolor, Mariner’s Compass, Quilt As You Go).

Julia C. (Judy) Wood started sewing as a child, but her life took a more technical route during her career as an engineer. When she stopped working to stay at home with her children, Judy returned to her creative roots and began quilting. Her love of computer technology and quilting led to the development of her technique to create quilted portraits of people and pets, as demonstrated in her first book, Fabric Photo Play AQS, 2005.
Judy has enjoyed teaching quilting nationally and locally for years, and gets tons of satisfaction from seeing students get excited about learning new techniques. She also has a popular quilting blog, greenquilts.blogspot.com, read regularly by hundreds of quilters. To celebrate the publication of her second book (and to celebrate the wonderful hexie!), Judy has established another blog: thehexieblog.blogspot.com. Be sure to check it out for lots of fun and inspirational hexie ideas!
When not quilting, Judy also enjoys cooking. She’s been a two-time finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off. She also enjoys boating and relaxing at a nearby lake with her husband, Mark, and their two dogs. Her two daughters are now grown and love to be the recipients of their mom’s quilts. Julia and Mark live in Auburn, Alabama.
