New AQS author Karen Duling is a dedicated animal lover. Her book, Quilting for the Paws, is dedicated to animal shelter staff and volunteers. Karen loves making quilts about dogs and cats! She started making them as fund-raising items for her community animal shelter. After a bit, she learned that these quilts also make thoughtful gifts for those who are grieving from the loss of a pet. And sometimes she makes them just for the joy of it!
Merle is Karen’s quilting companion! The family’s youngest member, he was adopted from an animal shelter. He’s a mix of Boston terrier, cocker spaniel, Pekingese, and Australian shepherd. He’s right there in the pages of her book, giving some wise quiltmaking tips along the way.
Karen has enjoyed many pets throughout her life, from a tightrope-walking mouse to a one-legged singing parakeet who could whistle the University of Michigan fight song. She’s an enthusiastic collector of animal themed fabrics. Karen hopes that you will be inspired to donate your animal-themed quilts to charity causes, too!
