Mary Shotwell Wins Best Longarm Workmanship Award

Melissa Winters, AQS Director of Education, enjoys a visit with Mary Shotwell, the recipient of the Best Longarm Workmanship Award at AQS QuiltWeek® – Des Moines, Iowa 2013.

Mary was surprised when she came to see the guild quilts and found out about the award for AUNTIE’S RED HOT GARDEN in an extraordinary way.

Looking at the quilt, it’s obvious that Mary loves needle-turn applique, circles, the color red, Kaffe Fassett fabrics, and fussy-cutting. She spent “off-and-on” five years appliquéing each block by hand; when the top was completed, turned it over to Deb Treusch, who was trusted to work on the extensive hand-appliqued design.

“It was great fun!” Mary said.

But Mary Shotwell didn’t quilt it! Don’t get me wrong, it’s her quilt, and it’s a beautiful quilt, but shouldn’t it be Deb Treusch winning the award?

Yeah, where’s the person who actually quilted it?? This lady could win an applique award, not the quilting award! Quite strange and unfair.
