Free Pattern: The Stag

The leaves are beginning to turn color as fall approaches. Get in the Autumn spirit with this majestic stag wool applique. Use this 16″ x 14″ block for a pillow, wallhanging, or table topper.

 

Gather your supplies: 

  • 18″ x 16″ piece of wool, flannel or cotton for background
  • 2 creams for antlers
  • 4 browns for body, head and ears
  • 2 lt browns for muzzle and body
  • black for eyes and nostrils

Cutting Instructions: 

Cut the background fabric to the desired size. The minimum for the pattern is 16″ x 14″ without seam allowances.

Applique – 

  • Trace the pattern pieces onto freezer paper. Be sure to add the parts that overlap.
  • Cut the pieces out leaving a border around all cutting lines.
  • Press the freezer paper to the front side of the wool scraps.
  • Cut out the stag pieces on the tracing line.

Putting the stag together:

Step 1 – Body

  • Using the diagram as a guide, place the three body sections on the background fabric.
  • Baste in place (glue isn’t recommended for this project since repositioning will be necessary).

Step 2 – Head

  • Using the diagram as a guide, place the head on the body and background fabric.
  • Baste in place.

Step 3 – Antlers and Ears

  • Using the diagram as a guide, place the antlers and ears on the head and background fabric.
  • Reposition any pieces necessary.
  • Baste in place.
  • Stitch all the pieces in place with matching embroidery floss once you are pleased with the positioning.

Step 4 – Muzzle

  • Using the diagram as a guide, place the muzzle on the head.
  • Baste in place.
  • Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.

Step 5 – Eyes & Nostrils

  • Using the diagram as a guide, place the eyes and nostrils on the head and muzzle.
  • Baste in place.
  • Stitch in place with matching embroidery floss.
  • Add any line embellishment such as eyelashes with embroidery floss.

Once finished with all the stitching, lay the piece face down on a towel and cover with another towel. Press quickly from the backside.

Trim the piece to the desired size for the finishing project.
