Fabric Requirements:

Scraps of greens for the mountains and tress

Scraps of blue for the sky

Scraps of white for the tops of the mountains

Scraps of brown for the tree trunks

Green Background & Sashing: 1 1/2 yards 

Blue Border: 1/2 yard

Binding: 1/2 yard

Backing: 4 yards

 

Cutting Instructions:

See the block instructions for paper piecing fabric. Please note: All paper piece parts sizes are listed on the big side. If you are confident with paper piecing, use the patterns for estimating what you need.

From the green background fabric, cut:

(16) 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles

(32) 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles

(16) 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares

(12) 2″ x 16 1/2″ rectangles for sashing

(4) 2″ x 2″ squares for sashing

 

From the tree trunk scraps, cut:

(16) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares

(32) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares

 

From the blue border fabric, cut:

(6) 2″ x width of fabric strips

 

From the binding fabric, cut:

(6) 2 1/2″ x width of fabric strips

 

Mountain Block:

For each Unit 1A you will need:

(1) 7″ x 7″ sky scrap

(1) 9″ x 5″ sky scrap

(1) 9″ x 5″ white scrap

(1) 11″ x 3″ green scrap

 

For each Unit 1B you will need:

(1) 5″ x 7″ sky scrap

(1) 9″ x 5″ white scrap

 

For each Unit 2 you will need:

(1) 3″ x 3″ green scrap

(2) 5″ x 3″ green scraps

(1) 11″ x 3″ green scrap

 

For each Unit 3 you will need:

(4) 5″ x 3″ green scraps

(1) 8″ x 3″ green scrap

(1) 4″ x 3″ green scrap

(1) 17″ x 3″ green scrap

 

For each Unit 4 you will need:

(1) 7″ x 5″ green scrap

(1) 15″ x 3″ green scrap

(1) 14″ x 4″ green scrap

Assemble units as shown below:

Mountain block measures 16 1/2″ X 16 1/2″. Make 5.

 

Tree Block:

For each Unit B1 you will need:

(1) 5″ x 3″ green scrap

(2) 5″ x 3″ background rectangles

 

For each Unit B2 you will need:

(1) 7″ x 3″ green scrap

(2) 4″ x 3″ background rectangles

 

For each Unit B3 you will need:

(1) 9″ x 3″ green scrap

(2) 3″ x 3″ background squares

 

Download and print the Foundation Paper Piecing Patterns:

Download Tree Block

 

To make Unit B4:

Sew a 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ background rectangle to each side of a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ brown square as shown below.

Assemble the units to form a Big Tree. Big Trees measure 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″. Make 2 for each Tree Block, 8 total.

For each Unit L1 you will need:

(1) 3″ x 2″ green scrap

(2) 3″ x 2″ background rectangles

 

For each Unit L2 you will need:

(1) 4″ x 2″ green scrap

(2) 3″ x 2″ background rectangles

 

For each Unit L3 you will need:

(1) 5″ x 2″ green scrap

(2) 2″ x 2″ background squares

 

To make Unit L4: 

Sew a 2″ x 1 1/2″ background rectangle to each side of a 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ brown square as shown above.

Assemble the units to form a Little Tree. Little Trees measure 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. Make 4 for each Tree Block, 16 total.

 

Use two Big Trees and four Little Trees, along with four 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ background squares to assemble the Tree Block.

The Tree Block measures 16 1/2″ x 16 1/2″. Make 4.

 

Quilt Assembly:

Using the quilt image above, sew the blocks and sashing into rows. Sew the rows into a quilt.

Sew together the 2″ x width of fabric border strips. 

Cut: (2) 51″ segments and (2) 54″ segments.

Sew a 51″ strip onto each side of the quilt. Sew the 54″ strips to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Quilt and bind.
