Measuring and Cutting:

Determine the length of the zipper bag by measuring the length of the bag it will be used in; add one inch to that measurement.

Determine the depth of the zipper bag by measuring the depth of the bag it will be used in; add one inch to that measurement.

Purchase a zipper at least the length of the finished measurement, or trim a longer zipper to size.

Cut two rectangles of the same size from the outer fabric, liner fabric and fusible interfacing.

Fuse the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of both pieces of the outer fabric. Follow manufacture’s instructions.

Outside:

Right sides together, lay the zipper over the outer fabric and secure so the edges match. Unzip the zipper halfway and sew using a zipper foot.

Leave the needle in the down position to move the zipper pull out of the way by rezipping.

Repeat on other side of the zipper with the remaining outer fabric rectangle.

Liner:

Lay the right side of the liner fabric over the wrong side of the zipper. Match the edges and secure. Unzip the zipper halfway and sew using a zipper foot.

Attach the liner by following the stitch line of the outer fabric.

Repeat on the other side of the zipper with the remaining liner fabric rectangle.

Fold the outer fabric and liner fabric wrong side together at this time, press, and top stitch if desired.

Bag construction:

With the zipper mostly undone, lay fabrics right sides together so the liners face one another and the outer fabrics face one another and secure.

Be sure to carefully match the sides at the zipper, with the zipper edges pointed towards the liner.

Using a ½” seam allowance, sew around the bag, leaving a 3” opening in the bottom of the liner fabric. Be careful while sewing over the zipper to avoid broken needles!

Turn right sides out, and gently point corners.

Tuck in unfinished opening of the liner and topstitch closed.

Push liner into bag and enjoy!

What about the fusible interfacing?

Hi Susan, Fuse the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of both pieces of the outer fabric. Follow manufacture’s instructions. Thanks, Betsey

JE Strub

The directions only say to cut fusible interfacing and do not say to fuse on either outside fabric or lining fabric. Where and when should the fusible interfacing be used?

Fuse it to the wrong side of the outer fabric after cutting. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks, Betsey

Judy

Is the fusible interfacing fused to the wrong side of the outer fabric?

Hi Judy, Yes, right after cutting. Thanks, Betsey
