Fabric Requirements
Red – 2/3 yard
Pink – 2/3 yard
Cream Background – 7/8 yard
Cream Cross – 5/8 yard
Sashing – 1/2 yard
Border – 3/4 yard
Binding – 1/2 yard
Backing – 3 3/4 yards
Cutting Instructions
From the red fabric, cut:
(5) 3 1/2″ x Width of Fabric (WOF) strips and subcut into
(18) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″
(18) 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
(1) 2 1/2″ x WOF strip and subcut into
(9) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
From the pink fabric, cut:
(5) 3 1/2″ x WOF strips and subcut into
(18) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″
(18) 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
(1) 2 1/2″ x WOF strip and subcut into
(16) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
From the cream background fabric, cut:
(5) 3 1/2″ x WOF strips and subcut into
(36) 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
(6) 1 1/2″ x WOF strips and subcut into
(144) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″
From the cream cross fabric, cut:
(6) 2 1/2″ x WOF strips and subcut into
(36) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″
From the sashing fabric, cut:
(1) 14 1/2″ x WOF strip and subcut into
(12) 14 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
From the border fabric, cut:
(6) 3 1/2″ x WOF strips, sew into one continuous strip using diagonal seams and then subcut
(2) 3 1/2″ x 50 1/2″
(2) 3 1/2″ 56 1/2″
From the binding fabric, cut:
(6) 2 1/2″ x WOF strips
Bloomin’ Valentine Block
14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ unfinished
Heart Unit
Mark the wrong side of the cream background 1 1/2″ squares in half diagonally once. Place a marked square on the corner of a red 3 1/2″ square as shown below.
Sew on the marked line, trim a 1/4″ seam and press. Repeat on the opposite corner to make the short side of the heart unit.
Repeat the same process as above on a red 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle as shown below to make the long side of the heart unit.
Lay a long and short side of the heart unit and a cream background 3 1/2″ out as shown below. Sew together to make a heart unit.
The heart unit measures 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ unfinished.
Repeat to make 18 Red Heart Units.
And repeat to make 18 Pink Heart units.
Block Assembly
Lay out two Red Heart units, two Pink Heart units, four cream cross 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles, and one red 2 1/2″ square as shown below.
Sew the pieces together into three rows, and then sew the rows together.
The Bloomin’ Valentine block measures 14 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ unfinished. Repeat to make 9 blocks.
Quilt Assembly
Quilt Center
Lay out the blocks, sashing 2 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ rectangles, and pink 2 1/2″ squares as shown below.
Assembly into rows. Sew the rows together to complete the quilt center. Quilt center measures 50 1/2″ x 50 1/2″ unfinished.
Borders
Sew the 3 1/2″ border strips into one continuous strip using diagonal seams and then subcut:
(2) 3 1/2″ x 50 1/2″
(2) 3 1/2″ 56 1/2″
Sew the 50 1/2″ strips to the left and right side of the quilt center and press. Then sew the 56 1/2″ strips to the top and bottom of the quilt to complete the quilt top. Quilt measures 56 1/2″ x 56 1/2″ unfinished.
Quilt your Bloomin’ Valentine as desired and bind using preferred method.
