In 2018 we explored styles of quilts from Baltimore Album to Miniature to Optical Illusion. As we begin a new year, we’re setting a new creative challenge for you.
Each month we’re going to share a classic quilt block. We’ll show you traditional takes, fresh techniques, and wild variations to make using the block. All month you get to play around with creating your own versions.
You can create whole quilts, or make a single 12″ block.
For each block, we’ll give you ideas for quilting it as you go, so at the end of the year you’ll have a sampler ready to go together, already quilted!
Ready to meet the blocks?

You didn’t miscount, there are 13 blocks. We just couldn’t resist. Before the challenge begins in earnest, you have a chance to gather supplies. Collect fabrics from your stash to play with color and value. Select a batting if you plan to quilt as you go. You’ll need 4 1/2 yards of backing if you want to use the same fabric for the entire back.
