The monumental textile mosaic, QUILT OF BELONGING, is heading for the QuiltWeek event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, August 20-23, 2014! It’s a 120-foot-long recording of human history; you will certainly be touched by the hearts of the 263 cultures responsible for the blocks.
The QUILT OF BELONGING, a project which began in 1999 and was completed in 2005, is an amazing 120 feet long. The materials used in the project range from sealskin to African mud cloth, and from embroidered silk to gossamer wings of butterflies. Participants were invited to contribute 11″ quilt blocks celebrating cultural groups; 70 represented all Aboriginal groups, and 193 featured the immigrant nationalities of Canada. Volunteers assembled the 263 blocks along with the 1200-piece border and tassels to create the completed piece of art.
Esther Bryan, the project’s creative artist, said, “The completed quilt with its many parts shows that the world can be integrated into the fabric of Canada, living together harmoniously, learning to respect one another for our differences while celebrating what we have in common.” Faithful supporters continue to give of their time and talents to ensure that the dream that became a reality can continue to be shared.
We can’t wait to see it!
