Easy Fabric Tray
by Emily Cross
Supplies
- 2 Fat Quarters
- 18″ square of Batting
- Walking Foot
- Quilting Thread (coordinates with fabric)
- Ruler
- Marking Tool
- Pins
Cutting & Assembly
Cut two squares of fabric 18″ and a square of batting to match.
Layer the fabric squares right sides together, and then place the batting on top of the stack of fabric.
Pin around the perimeter of the square. On one side, place the pins so there is a 4″-6″ opening for turning.
Install a walking foot on your sewing machine for easier piecing, if possible. Sew using a 1/2″ seam allowance starting at one of the opening pins all the way around to the opposite opening pin.
Trim the corners at a 45-degree angle, and trim the batting to 1/4″ to reduce bulk.
Reach into the opening between the two fabrics and turn right side out.
Poke out the corners and finger press around the edges to ensure no fabric is stuck in the seam. Then tuck the raw edges of the opening in and set with an iron.
Quilting
Start quilting 1/4″ from the edge down the open side to close the opening.
Continue quilting in any pattern you like. More dense quilting results in a more rigid tray.
After quilting, give a quick press to flatten any puffs that can warp the shape.
Corner Assembly
Fold the fabric sandwich in half diagonally so the edges meet.
Lay a ruler over the fold and measure 3″ from the tip. (This measurement creates the height of the walls, so adjust this measurement as you desire. Increase the measurement for a taller wall, or decrease for a shorter wall.)
Mark the measurement and pin the fold in place.
Sew on the marked line.
For a durable corner, pivot and sew back or sew in reverse from the edge to where you began sewing.
Repeat on all four corners to complete the fabric tray.
Try this with other precuts like 10″ and 5″ squares for medium and small trays!
