Block 9: Red & White
From the white fabric, cut:
(12) 1 5/8” x 1 5/8” squares
(7) 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” squares
(12) 1” x 1 1/2” rectangles
From the red fabric, cut:
(3) 2 1/2” x 2 1/2” squares
(6) 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” squares
(16) 1” x 1” squares
Mark twelve white 1 5/8″ squares in half diagonally once. Lay two white marked squares over a red 2 1/2″ square in diagonally opposite corners. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press.
Lay a marked white square over the corner of the red triangle. Sew a quarter inch from the marked line on both sides. Cut apart and press. Repeat with the other red triangle.
Trim Flying Geese to 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangle. Make 12 Flying Geese, two will be extra.
Mark the wrong side of a red 1” square in half diagonally once. Lay the marked red square, right sides together, on the left corner of a white 1” x 1 1/2″ rectangle with the marked line beginning in the top left corner.
Sew on the marked line. Trim 1/4” seam allowance and press towards the white. Make 6.
Repeat to make two units with the red square at the right end of the white rectangle with the marked line ending in the top right corner. Press towards the red. Make 6.
Sew 2 Flip units together to make a triangle. Make 6.
Half Square Triangles
Mark the wrong side of six white 1 1/2” squares in half diagonally once. Lay a marked white square over a red 1 1/2” square, right sides together. Sew a quarter inch from each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press towards the red.
Trim each Half Square Triangle to 1″ square. Make 12.
Sew a Flying Geese unit to the left and right sides of a white 1 1/2″ square, press towards the square.
Sew a Flip unit to the top and bottom of the block center.
Sew together two Flying Geese units side by side.
Sew a Flip unit to the top of the Flying Geese.
Unit measure 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″. Make 4.
Using the image below as a guide, sew a red 1″ square to a Half Square Triangle.
Sew to Half Square Triangles side by side, following the orientation shown below.
Sew these two rows together to complete the Corner unit.
Unit measures 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″. Make 4.
Lay the units out into rows. Sew the units into rows. Sew the rows together to complete the block.
Block measures 4 1/2″ square unfinished.
