2017 Christmas Countdown Quilt Setting Instructions

48″ x 48″

Fabric Requirements:

Red – 1 1/2 yards

White – 1 1/4 yards

Binding – 1/2 yard

+25 4″ Christmas Countdown Blocks

 

Cutting Instructions:

Red Fabric

(280) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares

(4) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares

(60) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles

(2) 2 1/2″ x 44 1/2″ strips (piece to make from the width of the fabric)

(2) 2 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ strips (piece to make from the width of the fabric)

 

White Fabric

(4) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ squares

(140) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares

(120) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles

 

Assembly Instructions:

Corner Block

4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ unfinished size.

Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner of (1) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ white square and (6) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ red squares for each block.

Lay the white marked square in the corner of a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ red square.

Sew on the drawn line. 

Cut off the corner 1/4″ from the sewn line.

Press the white corner completing the unit. Make 1 for each corner block.

Lay a red marked square in the corner of a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white square.

Sew on the drawn line.

Repeat for the opposite corner.

Press the red corners completing the unit. Make 3 for each corner block.

Sew the units together into two rows. Sew the rows together to make a block.

Make 4 Corner Blocks.

Sashing Blocks

4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ unfinished size

Sew a 4 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ white rectangle to each side of a 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ red rectangle.

Make 60 Sashing Blocks.

X Blocks

4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ unfinished size.

Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner of (8) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ red squares for each block.

Lay a red marked square in the corner of a 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ white square.

Sew on the drawn line.

Repeat for the opposite corner.

Press the red corners completing the unit. Make 3 for each corner block.

Sew the units together into two rows. Sew the rows together to make a block.

Make 32.

Sashing Row

Assemble the sashing row using 6 X Blocks and 5 Sashing Blocks. 

Note the direction of the Sashing Blocks.

Make 4 Sashing Rows.

Top and Bottom Rows

Assembly the top and bottom rows like the sashing rows, but replace the end X Blocks with Corner Blocks. Be sure to orient the Corner blocks in the right direction.

Make 1 Top and 1 Bottom Row.

Block Row

Sew a Sashing Block between each of the blocks in the row.

Sew a Sashing Block to the beginning and end of each block row.

Note the direction of the Sashing Blocks.

Make 5 Block Rows.

Borders

Sew the width of fabric strips together to make the border lengths needed. 

Sew a border to each side, then sew the borders to the top and bottom.

Thank you for the wonderful quilt patterns!

I didn’t get to start until mid-February, 2018, but I loved making this quilt! We know National Quilting Day is the annually recognized as the 3rd Saturday in March. This year it also fell on St. Patrick’s Day and the day we helped one of our kiddos move into their new home… so this year, no quilting was done in my studio on National Quilting Day. Excited to share that my 2017 Christmas Countdown quilt I called “Four-Inch Five-Squared” earned a Blue Ribbon in the 2018 Virginia Quilt Show at the State Fair in the BOM-Block of the Month category. 🙂
