A Fortuitous Mistake: Retrospective Quilts of Margaret Solomon Gunn

Sponsored by Martelli Enterprises

ZEN GARDEN by Margaret Solomon Gunn

A seamstress and casual quilter for 35 years, Margaret quit her engineering profession and bought a longarm quilting machine nine years ago. Soon after, following the suggestion of a fellow quilter, she entered a quilt in a show, accidentally applying to a different show than what was recommended! This proved to be a most fortuitous mistake. The quilt won a ribbon and as they say, the rest is history.

Two dozen competitive quilts later, Margaret’s exacting tendencies and competitive nature make her a natural for creating unique ribbon-winning quilts. All but two quilts feature Margaret’s preferred medallion-style layout – likely a result of being strongly left-brained. Midway through this journey, Margaret discovered silk fabric and fell hard for its beauty and sheen. To this day, combining silks and cottons together is a trademark of hers. Quilts in this retrospective exhibit show Margaret’s progression as a quilter over a twenty-four-year period.

SAQA: Tranquility

MORNING LIGHT by Linda Anderson

Tranquility is defined as a quality or state of being, possessing the concepts of quiet, peacefulness, calmness, or serenity. Tranquility, as a mental and physical concept, is the primary focus of certain religious sects, whereby tranquility of the body, thoughts, and consciousness are believed to lead to the path of personal enlightenment.

The works selected represent tranquility through color, line, and composition. Each work sets a mood of tranquility for the viewer.

PAISLEYS AND DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, OH MY! by Robin Gausebeck

What happens when you give artists the same fabric, same color, and same inspiration? The result is an amazing variety of ideas! All the pieces in this collection are created with Cherrywood Hand-Dyed Fabric. Artists took inspiration from Prince, the late musician from Minnesota (also home of Cherrywood). Because of the cohesive nature of the quilts, the exhibit makes a huge visual impact.

Desedamas – Spain

Challenges appear when we bring up questions without answers.
We asked ourselves how it would be to capture the experience of savouring a menu d’auteur on a quilt. How would we describe, using fabric, the texture of food, the tickling of the bubbles of a good cava, or the sweet flavour of ratafía – the strength and volatility of nourishment, its transparency, its sweetness and bitterness.
Silk is and will always be our basis, like water might be for a cook. Moving from the basic to the specific, we aimed at building bridges between cooking and textile art to turn a gourmet sampling menu into an exhibition menu.

I attended the Virginia Beach AQS show. I was mesmerized by the Prince quilts. The world lost a great talent when Prince died. These quilts show what great talent quilters have.
